Filling a closet with clothes doesn’t sound like a difficult task. At least, not until you’re struggling with an overly full and completely disorganized closet or until the clothes you want to wear are wrinkled or pulled out of shape just from being in the closet. Explore some of the most important strategies for storing clothes in your custom closet.
These strategies will help keep your closet straightened and your clothes safe.
Don’t just stick things in the closet without a plan. If you’ve never had a plan, or if the one you had when you originally moved into the closet has long since changed, it’s time to make one. Evaluate what you actually do and do not need in your closet.
Do have a lot of old clothes that you don’t wear anymore but haven’t gotten around to giving away? It's time to go through your closet to decide what can stay and what should go. This is usually easier if you take everything out. Sort your clothing into groups of what you intend to keep, what you want to donate, and what just needs to be thrown away. Get the other two groups out of the way, and the pile of clothes you intend to keep will be much more manageable when you start to refill your closet.
Do the same thing with your shoes, accessories, and other closet items. When you’re left with only the items you definitely plan to keep and use, you’ll have a better idea of what your space and storage needs actually are.
Don’t start putting those clothes back yet. Remember, you need a plan. Figuring out how much space you need is only the first step. Next, you have to start thinking about how you’re going to use that space.
Do you share the closet? If so, you can start by dividing it to allow each person to have their own half of the closet. Closets that feel a little too small for both of the people using them can lead to tension and arguments, so make sure you each have your own space.
After that’s finished, or if you’re working on a closet that only you use, it’s time to work on dividing the clothes into their own sections. You should have places for folded clothes and hanging clothes. You can further divide them by putting shirts in one drawer and jeans in another or by hanging tops and bottoms on separate ends of the rod. Hanging clothes could also be divided by adding a second rod lower than the first and putting tops on the higher rod and bottoms on the lower.
You should also have different sections for shoes, accessories such as ties, belts, scarves, jewelry, and anything else you may want to keep in your closet. Each type of item should have its own place. If you don’t seem to have enough places to put each type of item without mixing them in with others, it’s time to start looking into closet accessories. Closet accessories include shelves, additional hanging rods, boxes and bins, baskets, hooks, racks, and other holders or containers. These will help you create and maintain separate sections for all of your items.
You decided what kind of closet space you needed, and you sectioned off your closet to ensure that there was space in all the places you needed. Good job! Now it’s time to put the clothes back. Are you sure that you know what goes where?
Knowing the difference between what to fold and what to hang makes a big difference in your closet. Your clothes won’t fit right and won’t come out looking like they should when you put them in the wrong places.
According to Martha Stewart, the items that must be hung include flowy fabrics, linen clothing, blouses, pants, jacks, and the majority of dresses. Sweater dresses and dresses made of similar heavy material are an exception. Meanwhile, you should fold thick sweaters, shorts, and activewear. T-shirts and jeans can be hung or folded, so put away the other items first, then see where you have space left. Still, have a couple of drawers free? Go ahead and fold the T-shirts and jeans. Have big empty spaces on your hanging rods? Hang them up instead. Have free space for both folded clothes and hanging clothes? Split them up in a way that makes sense to you. Another thing to keep in mind is that a shelf is a great place to store a stack of folded T-shirts.
If you want to be satisfied with your closet, you need to make sure it’s organized as well as it can be. Knowing what you need, where you want things to go, and how to put them away will help you get your closet under control.
